Before the rise of technology in this decade,
teaching-learning process mostly use printed book as only source. Printed book
in some ways can be an alternative media for teaching, but if we as a teacher
only use printed book, the source will be just limited to the content in that
book. Besides, students in this era will easy get bored. So then, by the rise
of technology, the sources became variously interesting. Technology development
has been advanced to support education, and one of the supports is served many
sources for learning English. The sources can be divided in two types, sources
that is designed for learning and original sources that is more naturally like
daily live.
The original sources can attract students’ interest more
than sources designed for learning. Original sources in this discussion are
sources that come from real live, such as news, speech, or real conversation in
daily life. By this source’s students can relate material to their life or
instead. So, these sources effectively will help teacher to serve materials
that students can absorb. The sources can easily reach on online media. Here
are two examples of original online sources, www.bbc.com and www.cnn.com.
www.bbc.com, The British
Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcaster. This
site contains many news by many sub themes that is served separately one of the
subs is BBC learning English that we can find directly on google by searching
BBC learning English. This page provides many sources that are designed for
learning. Other subs also can be a source for learning through real context.
Beside many tips for student, In BBC learning English, there are also many tips
for teacher about how to manage class, such as vocabulary class, grammar class,
etc. While for www.cnn.comis also an online news platform that provide
international news. You can find news in various parts of the world. This site
has a “world” button, to makes you easier to find news according to your
country you wanted to read. CNN has a video for each news to make the reader
get the audio-visual information. This platform is very suitable for teacher to
teach the students about everything, especially when they should find a news.
You can teach your students with Audio learner and Visual learner. But, in this
platform is nothing about culture specifically. While in bbc.com there is a
specific button about culture.
The teacher can use these original online sources
while teaching about News Item, Fact and Opinion and etc. For example, when
we’re going to teach about News Item, we can use these online sources to find news
that we can use as a learning process and example. Firstly, we have to open the
news from BBC or CNN. Then, choose the news. After that, the students can see a
video from that online sources, it makes the auditory and visual learner easily
get the meaning of the news. Next, we can ask the students to read a passage
about the news. Teacher can tell the students about News Item from that
passage. After that, ask the students to find a News Item from the online
sources. There are a lot of news that the students can found and explore by
themselves.
From
what we have talked above, we as a teacher can use original online sources to
help our learning process in the class, it helps us a lot as a teacher. We can
find many sources or material to be used in the class. So, our class is not
really flat with only book as the source. We also have variations for the
material so we can select the proper one to give for our student, it also might
help students to kill their boredom because it's not book oriented, because as
we know studying by only using book is boring. Here online sources for teaching
English can be implemented in the classroom because it gives us so many benefits,
for students and also for the teacher.
